Laurin & Klement Type B motorbike.
From Bicycles to Cars
Driven by craftsmanship and innovation, Škoda founders Václav Laurin and Václav Klement began their journey 130 years ago in a workshop in Mladá Boleslav, producing high-quality and affordable bicycles.
The pair’s expertise and racing passion led them to present their first motorbikes in 1899 – the Slavia A and Slavia B. The Slavia Type B gained international attention at the prestigious Paris-Berlin race in 1901 for its competitive performance. This recognition enhanced the reputation of the young brand, and Laurin & Klement continued their success by launching their first car in 1905 – the L&K Voiturette A.
Yet even as the company evolved into one of Europe’s prominent car manufacturers, cycling remained in the company’s DNA – a testament to the founders’ original vision and the values of precision engineering that defined their very first products.
Škoda’s Links with Cycling Today
Škoda has long embraced cycling as part of its identity, carrying this tradition forward through modern partnerships. For over two decades, Škoda has supported professional cycling, collaborating with major events and teams worldwide.
Since 2004, Škoda has served as the official main partner of the Tour de France, the world’s largest cycling event. This year, Škoda Auto provided a fleet of 224 electrified support vehicles for the race.
Closer to home, Škoda New Zealand proudly sponsors Cycling New Zealand Schools, investing in the next generation of Kiwi cyclists.
We Love Cycling: Building a Global Community
Taking its love of cycling beyond professional racing, Škoda launched the We Love Cycling platform – a digital hub dedicated to cycling culture and community. More than just a website, it’s a celebration of everything that makes cycling special, from racing and lifestyle to leisurely rides.
The platform features original stories, fresh videos, and special reports from the world of cycling. Whether you’re a seasoned racer, a casual commuter, or simply someone who loves the freedom of two wheels, We Love Cycling offers inspiration, practical advice, and connection to a global network of enthusiasts.
Through this initiative, Škoda demonstrates its enduring commitment to the sport – not just through sponsorship, but by fostering the culture that makes cycling a lifestyle and tradition that continues to define the brand.
Looking Forward
From two wheels to four, Škoda’s journey has always been driven by passion and innovation. What began as a bicycle workshop in 1895 continues today through Škoda’s commitment to cycling – supporting riders, communities, and the spirit of the sport that started it all.
